If you've encountered Human Design, you've probably seen the bodygraph: that distinctive figure with nine centres and the channels connecting them. But every gate in that figure has its place on something larger: the mandala.
The Human Design mandala (also called the Rave Mandala) is a circular wheel containing 64 gates. These gates are the foundation of Human Design.
The 64 Gates Explained
The 64 gates aren't arbitrary: they come from the I Ching. Each gate corresponds to one of the I Ching's 64 hexagrams, six lines carrying thousands of years of contemplation, each representing a specific frequency of change.
The same number appears in genetics: there are 64 codons in the genetic code, the patterns that build life through DNA. In Human Design, each hexagram corresponds to one of those 64 codons. Spirit encoded in matter.
Each gate has a number (1-64), a name, and its own position in the wheel. Gate 1 is Self-Expression. Gate 64 is Confusion, and its hexagram is Before Completion: the box that holds all possibilities, and the name behind our Pandora collection.
Structure of the Mandala
The mandala is built in layers:
The 64 Gates
The main ring, where each gate holds its own arc of the wheel: 5.625° each. Gates are numbered but not sequential. The order starts at Gate 41 and runs 41, 19, 13, 49, 30, 55 and on around the circle.
The Lines
Each gate is subdivided into 6 lines (1-6), giving 384 total line positions: the finest detail the wheel shows.
The Calendar
When each gate is active in the collective field. As the Sun moves through its annual cycle, it activates each gate for approximately 5.7 days.
The Centre
The heart of the wheel can hold the bodygraph: nine centres connected by the potential of 36 channels, each channel linking a specific pair of gates.
Our mandalas carry more rings besides. Pandora, for example, also shows the trigrams, faces, incarnation crosses, Gene Keys, quarter names, gate names, I Ching hexagrams and codons.
The Four Quarters
The mandala is divided into four quarters. With the eight trigrams of the I Ching, they are the structural divisions of the wheel:
Quarter of Initiation
Quarter of Civilisation
Quarter of Duality
Quarter of Mutation
The quarter names are printed on every one of our mandalas. On Quantum, the quarters sit inside the expanded bodygraph at the centre.
How to Read the Mandala
The gates run counter-clockwise around the wheel. Its sequence begins at Gate 41 and runs 41, 19, 13, 49, 30, 55 and on around the circle: not numerical order, but the order of the wheel.
As the Sun moves through its annual cycle, it activates each gate for approximately 5.7 days. That is when each gate is active in the collective field, and our mandalas carry those calendar dates as a ring of their own.
In a personal chart, the planets' positions at the moment of your birth activate specific gates, creating your unique design. These activations colour in parts of the bodygraph, which is why a Quantum mandala with the Personalised Bodygraph option can illuminate your defined channels within its nine centres.
Mandala vs Bodygraph: What's the Difference?
The Mandala
- • Shows all 64 gates in fixed positions
- • Universal: the same for everyone
- • Shows when each gate is active in the collective field
- • Shows the "where": each gate's place on the wheel and in the year
- • Built on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching
The Bodygraph
- • Shows nine centres and 36 channels
- • Personal: your chart is unique to you
- • Shows your configuration of the universal pattern
- • Shows the "what": your defined channels and centres
- • Coloured in by the gates active at your birth
Think of the mandala as the context and the bodygraph as the content. The mandala shows where the gates live in the wheel; the bodygraph shows which gates are active in your personal design and how they connect.
Why the Mandala Matters
Most people meet Human Design as a bodygraph chart on a screen. Almost nobody has seen the full wheel:
- Following the global cycles: the slow drift of the equinox through the wheel (see the Eden Mechanism)
- Seeing the full wheel: all 64 gates, not only the ones in your own chart
- Contemplating the gates: their names, meanings, and relationships
- Connecting to the I Ching: thousands of years of contemplation
- Recognising patterns: which gates sit opposite each other on the wheel
Living With the Mandala
The mandala isn't meant to be understood intellectually in one sitting. It's a meditation object: something you live with over time, letting different aspects reveal themselves as you're ready.
This is why we create physical mandala art on premium materials: canvas and museum-grade aluminium. When you hang the wheel on your wall, you see it daily. Different gates catch your attention at different times. The knowledge seeps in through the eyes.
"The art is the data. The data is the art."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Human Design mandala?
The Human Design mandala is a circular wheel of 64 gates, the same 64 hexagrams found in the I Ching, arranged in a fixed order around the circle. At the moment of your birth, the planets activated specific gates on this wheel, creating your unique design.
What are the 64 gates in Human Design?
Each gate is a specific energy or theme, numbered 1-64. Each corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, and each hexagram corresponds to one of the 64 codons in the genetic code. Every gate has six lines, giving 384 in all.
How do you read a Human Design mandala?
Start at Gate 41 and follow the wheel counter-clockwise: 41, 19, 13, 49, 30, 55 and on around the circle. The order is not numerical. Each gate takes up 5.625° of the circle and is divided into six lines, and as the Sun moves through its annual cycle it activates each gate for approximately 5.7 days.
What is the difference between the mandala and the bodygraph?
The mandala is the wheel showing all 64 gates in their fixed positions; it is the same for everyone. The bodygraph is the figure of nine centres connected by 36 channels; your chart colours it in with the gates active at your birth, which makes it personal to you. The mandala provides context; the bodygraph shows your specific configuration.
